I was trying to figure out what the clicking sound was that was coming from my car. So I was under it for about 10 minutes slightly moving the exhaust to see if anything was clanking. The 10 people that passed me gave me a strange face, but it was in the name of science!!! BTW I figured it out. It isn't a big deal, it is just the collar claps and maybe the V-band clamp tapping the exhaust, just really annoys me with all the creeks the car already has.
Also dem wheels.

I just spent a week under my car fiddling with the clutch system before giving up and driving it (cluthlessly) to a mechanic. If you look crazy to you neighbors, my neighbors must think I'm batshit insane.

Haha, well my problem is less serious. It was more a nucience. If I find a 11mm wrench somewhere I am going to have to do the work in the parking lot. . .
Also clutchless shifting, How was it?

Well, people in my neighborhood look at me real funny when I have to jump my car in the morning, then it squeals like a supercharged banshee for about 10-20 minutes...

If it is loud, they hate you. If you do it everyday, they think you are weird. I on the otherhand think banshee screams are to die for.

Exhaust rattles are a pain. I was just about ready to get some exhaust work done when my clutch hydralics started acting funny. Shifting without using the clutch is cool if you watch the tach, but starting from a dead stop is tricky since I had to use the starter to get the car moving, which takes a bit of finesse (of which I have little). It's certainly doable and can save you a tow truck bill, but it's definitely not a long term solution.
Nice wheels, BTW.

It is super loud, but usually only after I get on the road. I only have to jump my car about once a week now, so that's good. I have one of those portable jump thingies, so that was a great investment. Banshee screams are fine unless they're coming from your alternator.

Those wheels make the brakes look so small
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:21 |

Hey don't thank me, I still have the stock wheels. I am not sure how I would clutchless shift though. . . probably terribly. Although I heard you can pull out of a gate really easily, it is putting it in that is the hard part. . . kind of like sex.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:22 |

Haha, they do, but the wheels are so nice. I however cannot figure out the massively wide tires, for what might be 350 hp max. He doesn't need 10.5 inch rubber, maybe 9.5 at max.

whats the smallest wheel size you can fit on frz86?
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:30 |

16 inches, 15 if you are luck. Although they look really funny.

Whats a double post?
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:32 |

Yeah, lol. Once you pull out of one gate, you rev the engine a little more to go to the next gate. At least that's how it was in my car. Downshifting was hard though, since you have to match wheel speed with the tach and the gear you want to get into, all while slowing down. Not an easy task. Up shifting was surprisingly easy in contrast.

I want to try this, but I don't want to grind my gears.

How old is your car?
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:37 |

Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2? Apparently in 18x8 they are 19.8 lbs. I would suggest a 16in or 17in size though.

Gear grinding is very likely. Check some youtube vids to see correct the shift points for your particular car. One of the more popular vids on clutchless shifting takes place in a Mini Cooper S, which is coincidentally what I' m driving. Watching that vid helped a lot in figuring out when and how to correctly shift without grinding gears.

Those look really nice. But why 16inches? I plan on getting bigger/lighter brakes in the future, I kind of want some space(a bit more just to be safe).
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:43 |

I have seen that, but still I would literally be leaving brown stain in my paints doing this. Scarier than driving off a cliff.

1995.
If you're about to ask how old the alternator is, about 5 weeks.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:48 |

I guess 17 is stock wheel size, so thats what I would go with. Tires are a part of the suspension and reducing sidewall increases the work and wear of other suspension components. This is fine for track only cars but undesirable for street driven cars.
Look into the Team Dynamics they are often the best compromise of price/performance. There is a good reason lots of track cars and track&street cars wear these shoes.

That makes perfect sense. . . no wait, that doesn't.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:51 |

My plan is to keep a big sidewall. Stock is 45, and I am planning 40 with 18 inch wheels. Although the more I look up, the more I know. . . that I don't have a clue what I am doing.
I really need a nice price because the Gram Lights I am looking at are about 1.7K, WAY too much!
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:51 |

...Exactly. O'Reilly's gave me an alternator that sucks. Lifetime replacement, but it means I have to take it out again. And put a new one in, in the same day...
![]() 09/10/2013 at 00:52 |

I wouldn't try it unless you had to. I only tried it at first because I had a job meeting I couldn't miss and I had to have my own car as proof of reliable transportation. Otherwise, I would have left clutchlesss shifting to the more adventurous.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:03 |

Well atleast it was free.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:04 |

Well... After dropping $300 on it and finding out that it won't fit with stock bolts, I was sort of frustrated... Just can't wait to do it again.
Or I should just get a toyobaru.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:06 |
|
Well that depends do you like your current car? If not, go with a Toyobaru. You will love it!
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:07 |

I love my car. Just need to know that I'm going to get to work in the morning. Also, can't nearly afford the Toyobaru. But I'm trying to get my co-worker to get one... Live vicariously...
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:07 |
|
haha 40 is a big sidewall? I'm at 55 and don't want to go any smaller!
1.7k is rather pricey,
17in TD will be around $220/wheel
18in will be around $250/wheel
Also remember larger tires cost more for less (rubber), like lady's underwear
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:08 |
|
He should get one, but what type of person is he? I know someone here made a post about a co-worker who was not so smart when it comes to cars, not sure if that was you.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:10 |
|
I don't think so. But I would imagine many co-workers are not too smart with cars. He hasn't had a car since highschool (about 12 years) but likes reliability, good gas mileage, RWD and sportiness. He likes my M3, but wants something that won't fall apart all the time. So, I recommended the Toyobaru. He's not in a hurry to buy a car, though.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:12 |
|
Yeah I know 40 isn't the biggest side wall, but it isn't a huge difference when compared to stock. I will have to do my research on these wheels, cause I want something that is light, durable, and looks nice and, it has to be under 1.5K(gave myself a big budget, I just need to get the money).
Plus the funny thing about my car is, you can buy better rubber for cheaper than the stock tires. That is only for 17x7 though.

If he is okay with a lack of power, then it is a great car. The lack of power can be cured though, with a few simple mods. Not much but 15hp gives the car a peppier feel.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:16 |
|
Yes, he would gladly trade excess power for MPGs. There's plenty of cops around where he lives/works/travels so no need to hoon around the roads or get into street racing or anything. He would be happy with a stock BRZ, as would I. Although I'd give mine some mods, as you have started to plot out.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:21 |

Once you get one thing, you want everything!!
If he doesn't like manuals the auto kind sucks. . . it is slower than the manual, and heavier, and the shifts aren't the best. Just tell him to get the manual.
![]() 09/10/2013 at 01:27 |
|
Ah yes, story of my life.
Oh, I think he'd get the manual. If he wanted an automatic I would say something different would be best for him.

A friend of mine almost did this. He was going down an icy hill and ran into a car instead. He was driving a Chevy Cobalt at the time, bit the bullet, and got a WRX.

This is basically why I don't drive in the winter, that and rust. Sometimes I am glad for public transportation.
